As the lights fade to black and a sold-out stadium erupts in cheers that pierce the summer night sky, the moment feels surreal. Five years prior, the Jonas Brothers as the world had known it had ceased to exist. At one point, it seemed as though their 2013 breakup would bury them into the depths of boyband obscurity. Their meteoric rise back into the pop culture zeitgeist was a plot twist even they didn’t see coming. After a whirlwind reunion in 2019, the Jonas Brothers are now more popular than ever, selling out their first ever stadium show, Yankee Stadium, for two back-to-back nights.
The new three-hour show, titled THE TOUR, will make its way across the globe to combine the brothers past discography and their newest release, THE ALBUM. It celebrates their past while praising their present work, all while looking towards their future with optimism to see what they can accomplish as grown men.
“You are the wings I need to fly away” are the lyrics heard in an angelic tone as the trio emerges onstage. As they come into view for the adoring crowd, they immediately jump to ‘Celebrate’ to kick off the night with high energy they hope to keep. The following dozens of tracks returns many to their years of growing up right alongside these guys and offers the maturity of being able to appreciate the band for all they were and all they can be.
THE TOUR boasts five albums performed in one night, made possible by medleys that are always enticing and leave the crowd wanting more in the best way.
Album by album, we get to see the Jonas Brothers blossom, musically and physically, with plenty of throwback elements shown onscreen, inducing “I remember that!” moments for their most loyal fans. From biggest hits to deep cuts, the show is a heartfelt love letter to everyone who took a chance on these three Jersey boys in the last seventeen years.
When Nick Jonas sits himself at the piano, he gets sentimental discussing how the band used to sit up in the nosebleed seats for Yankee games at that very stadium, as that was all they could afford in their humble beginnings. That’s just one story of how things have come full circle for them. To the fans, like myself, it was a beautiful moment to see the stadium full of support for the band that always meant the most to me, even if others didn’t understand. I couldn’t help but feel like I rode that journey with them, and together, we accomplished something great.
Now that the eras of teen stardom and boyband-of-my-youth nostalgia have waned, it begs the question of how they were able to cement themselves as a permanent fixture in the band landscape, when so many others have failed to have a lasting career such has theirs. After so many years of hard work and creating genuine, positive music, it’s about time for a different narrative.
They’ve earned it and they have so much still to do. Let’s give them the respect they deserve and start taking the Jonas Brothers seriously.
